South College Scholarships and Bursaries


South College offers a number of scholarships and bursaries, you can find out about what the College offers and how you can apply below, or follow this link.


South College North East Scholar Bursary

Up to £1000 each to four undergraduate students in South College to offset their College accommodation fees.

The South College North East Scholar fund is designed to allow students from low-income backgrounds in the North East to engage fully with the student experience at South College.

Eligibility

  • You must be a home undergraduate student, living in College accommodation, who will be starting their studies in 2024/25 and do not already hold an undergraduate degree.

  • You must clearly evidence genuine financial need.

  • You must be normally resident in one of the following North East postal regions; CA, DH, DL, NE, SR or TS when not at University.

  • Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer.

How to apply

Please complete the application form.

If successful, a payment of £1000 will be paid to offset the award holder’s College accommodation fees in the second or third term of the academic year.

Please note these awards are competitive so please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of any award.


South College Travel Bursary Fund

Up to £300 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance and wishing to travel to support their personal development or their studies. 

Eligibility

  • You must clearly evidence genuine financial need.

  • You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs (you can claim less than the maximum amount if more appropriate). Applications without itemised costs will not be considered.

  • Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer.

How to apply

Please complete the application form.

In 2024/25 applications will be accepted throughout the academic year and assessed on a case-by-case basis until all awards have been made.

If successful, a payment of up to £300 will be paid before the end of term.


South College JCR Levy fund

Up to £180 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance to join the Junior Common Room and take part in the full range of social and development activities available in South College.

Eligibility

  • You must clearly evidence genuine financial need.

  • Please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of your JCR Membership.

  • Open to any student, whether living in College or not.

  • The amount awarded will reflect your levy charge, for example £180 for a three-year undergraduate or £50 for a one-year postgraduate.

  • Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer.

How to apply

Please complete the application form.

If successful, a payment of up to £180 will be paid directly to the JCR, who will confirm your membership. If you have already paid the levy up to £180 will be refunded to you by the College.

In 2024/25 applications will be accepted throughout the academic year and assessed on a case-by-case basis until all awards have been made.


South College Opportunities fund

£150 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance to take part in the full range of social and development activities available in South College. This might be the cost of a club or society subscription kit, attending Formals, equipment, travel costs, etc. Applicants should account for costs up to the £150 award. Costs may be spread over more than one activity. Individuals may only apply once each academic year.

Eligibility

  • You must clearly evidence genuine financial need.

  • You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs. Applications without itemised costs will not be considered.

  • Please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of the award to take part in College life.

  • Open to any student, whether living in College or not.

  • Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer.

Owl Scholarship Fund

Each year the College allocates £1000 from its funds to support students of South College through Personal Development Awards and Conference Presentation and Attendance Grants. These awards are worth up to £200 each. Individuals may only apply once each academic year.

Eligibility

  • You must be a student at South College.

  • You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs (you can claim less than the maximum amount if more appropriate). Applications without itemised costs will not be considered.

  • Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer.
