The JCR Levy
What is the JCR Levy?
Durham has the most amazing collegiate system, of which we are the newest kid on the block. Within every College is a Junior Common Room (JCR), largely driven by a team of superb, elected student volunteers, and led by a full-time President. From the moment you arrive here at South, to the moment you leave, the JCR should forge the beating heart of your time at University, working tirelessly on your behalf. The JCR operates every single sports team and society in the College. The JCR runs frequent events spanning every interest, providing you endless opportunities to bond with friends and meet new people (and importantly have fun). We organise your Winter and Summer Ball, where we get dressed up in black-tie, go to a gorgeous venue, and have incredible amounts of fun. We organise a yearly fashion show, giving you the opportunity to model and raise money for charity. We run a college day in summer, celebrating our identity and community. We run the Freshers Week you are soon to embark on, providing the volunteers that’ll be helping you unpack your belongings, and get settled into what will quickly become a second home.
To join the JCR, you must pay a one-off levy, that provides you membership for your complete time with us, and entitles you to a large variety of benefits.
The price of your levy will vary depending on how long your course is. The JCR uses your levies to subsidise everything you go on to immerse yourself in from the point you join us, including Freshers’ week. Those who do not join the JCR cannot participate in sports, societies, and find they pay significantly more to attend our larger events like the ball. It is absolutely something you should do, and you will quickly see a return on your levy. In fact, most our students find it pays for itself after a year or two with us, and the experiences they get from it are invaluable.
You will also find details for support you can access even before you have joined us, helping you to fund this levy if the price is a barrier to membership (https://southcollegejcr.com/financial-support). The levy is well worth securing, especially in advance of Freshers’ Week, allowing you to attend exclusive events during the week, and pay less for your wristband.
Gym Membership
South College’s gym is one of the best of the university’s colleges’ gyms. It is located on the first floor of the Mount Oswald Hub, and is shared with John Snow college. To access the gym, you must buy a gym membership. Further info is available here.
South College is gowned, meaning gowns are worn to Matriculation and Formal Dinners. Matriculation is a congregation to welcome you to the University community and formal dinners are a communal dining experience which will take place regularly throughout the year.
